Delivering Clean Water and Hygiene for Healthier Communities
At SCR Kenya, we believe that access to safe water, improved sanitation, and proper hygiene are foundational to thriving, resilient communities. Through targeted WASH interventions, we combat waterborne diseases, reduce child mortality, and promote dignity in marginalized areas across Kenya.
Our Water, Sanitation & Hygiene initiatives include:
- Distribution of PUR (water purifier) sachets to schoolchildren and vulnerable households for home-level water purification.
- Installation of water storage tanks and rainwater harvesting systems in communities and schools.
- Community-led hygiene education campaigns promoting handwashing, safe water storage, and latrine use.
- Behavior change initiatives through theater performances, school health clubs, and public forums to encourage long-term adoption of safe WASH practices.
Challenges We Address
Water and sanitation challenges affecting rural and peri-urban communities include:
- Over 60% of households in Kilifi and Kwale Counties lack access to safe drinking water, leading to high rates of diarrheal and waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.
- Poor sanitation infrastructure, with many schools and villages lacking basic latrines and handwashing stations.
- Limited awareness and education around hygiene practices, resulting in preventable illness and loss of productivity.
- Climate variability reducing the reliability of traditional water sources such as rivers and shallow wells.
